An Open Letter to UC Athletics Director John Cunningham about Men's Basketball

March 12, 2026

To: John Cunningham, AD at the University of Cincinnati,

Thank you for taking the time to review this. I am a 1989 graduate and a long time season ticket holder. I have witnessed first hand the depths to which this program has fallen and the heights it has achieved. And I believe Bearcats men’s basketball is one of the historically best programs in the country. With that said…

Over the course of your tenure, you have stated many times that the goal for Bearcats athletics is to compete for championships. Let’s take a look at the men’s basketball record over the course of Coach Wes Miller’s tenure and weigh it against that goal.

  • Overall record: 96-71 (.574)
  • 1-4 in the Crosstown Shootout
  • 18-18 in the AAC (.500)
  • 14-24 in the Big 12 (.368)
  • 9-41 vs. Q1 (0.18)
  • 5-20 vs. ranked opponents (0.20)
  • 12-21 record in games decided by >5 points (.364)
  • 0 conference championships
  • 0 conference tournament championships
  • 0 NCAA tournaments

At a game by game level, we have seen many examples under the current coaching staff where the Bearcats either failed to comeback to win games or failed to finish games where the Bearcats were in a very good position to win.

Given this record, I believe that UC men’s basketball is at a critical juncture. It is very clear that the fan base which has been very supportive is very frustrated with the results. I firmly believe that continuing on the current course will have a significant negative impact on the fanbase including a significant drop off in season ticket renewals. I for one will have to seriously reconsider renewing my season tickets if no change in leadership is made.

If the goal truly is competing for championships, then I believe a change in leadership is needed. The current leadership has had ample time to prove itself and the results speak for themselves.
